BW Diary, May 2013:
So here's the thing.....
So here's the thing.....
... a lot of important movements happen spontaneously. Just think about it, The American Revolution, the Obama Presidency, the Louisiana Purchase -- no one saw those coming. The birth of Big Wrench was pretty similar. One simple RSD post about a tournament called Driftwood Huckfest, that turned into one hell of a thrown together mixed squad, that turned into 4 cases of victory Dogfish Head. All in one, poison ivy filled weekend. Really makes you think.
Big Wrench wasn't glamorous back in those days. None of the cushy o-line / d-line split. You pulled your weight on D then stayed on the line to pull it again. Every game was a battle to see if we would run out of players, and words like "open", "mixed" and "dump, reset" didn't really mean anything to us. We won most of the time, but when we lost it didn't really matter. That wasn't what was important.
What's important was that the Big Wrench 'tude caught on. That shit started to spread throughout our blood until we couldn't help but put ourselves to the next test. When we threw our hats into the ring at the 2010 Boston Invite we did so with a little swagger. Mike Lawlor came out of retirement, Matt Jerry wore #69 and 6'7" Kevin almost fought some Canadians. We did it big by winning our pool, nearly pulling a stern upset and then sucking wind in the backdoor bracket. Classic. Didn't matter. The word was out.
And then, as with all dynasties, the dark ages descended. Historians call 2011-2013 "The Wildwood Years" as BW only appeared on sand rather than the grass we were built for (other names for the era are "The Why Do We Always Go to That Chicken Place in New Jersey Years" "The Time of Elias Breaking a Door at the Bolero" and "The Year of the Loko"). That's not to say we didn't excel, because we did. In 2011 we only fell to a team who took that shit way too seriously. Then in 2012 a rain out halted our clear victory and we were forced to take refuge at the Wawa.
So where does that leave us, dear reader. Why back at the start. Born from spontaneity and a "fuck it let's go bowling" mentality, Big Wrench is finally doing what we have threatened to do for years. Becoming a real team.
