A shot at gold
#BWCL chunked our way into Reginald's dinner party as the 8 seed. Nestled up there at the top of the bracket, we faced 9 seed Mephisto early Saturday morning. Corndogs were flying as we nabbed a couple of breaks early, despite struggling to maintain possession at times. Their creative throws kept our defense from pulling away, but our offensive line handled their zone well and we took a halftime lead. In the second half we faltered, unable to erase the questionable decision that had plagued us earlier in the game. 'Phisto began to capitalize on our mistakes and eventually overtook us for a 15-13 victory.
To the second place bracket!
In losing our first game, we faced a longer, but different path to the end of the road. First on the docket was Pride Rock, who appeared to be made up of some UConn players and whatnot. In this game we tried to hold ourselves to a higher standard of possession, and it paid off with us jumping out to a huge lead. They were never really within striking distance thanks to Josh Fries' game saving layout D that made waves on the internet this week. Just kidding, it was a blowout.
Matter-day
In our second elimination game of the day we faced Ottawa's Phoenix. This was a much more heated contest, as they came in the 6 seed and likely fancied themselves a shot at a bid. While our zone looks tried to shut down their potent offense, over on the O-line we struggled to click. Misthrows and miscommunications led to a couple break deficit at half. After trading a bit, we came gunning last in the game taking an 11-9 lead. However, with the score 11-10, a couple of costly turnovers led to breaks, letting them take the lead once again. In the end we fell in a soft capped game, thus ending our tragically abbreviated run.
Fun (and Funboy)
For our final game, a consolation match against Youngbloods, we opened up the lines, moved Funboy to offense and let it all hang out. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, we cruised to a casual victory in a game that reminded everyone that Spies is a beast and Pete is a doofus.
...and...
While this marked the end of our USAU season, Big Wrench will be leaving our mark around the Northeast during the off-season. Whenever there's a fight so hungry people can eat, we'll be there. Whenever there's a scorpion bowl undrank at the Hong Kong, we'll be there. Whenever there's a Christmas themed tournament on Cape Cod, we'll be there.
Oh yeah, and a highlight video. That's in the works.
